MrBendy453 Posted August 4, 2025 #1 Posted August 4, 2025 Hey all, Was looking at this before it sold. What do you guys think? Looks like the SS runes were painted over a Heer decal. eBay link
Marshallj Posted August 4, 2025 #2 Posted August 4, 2025 Can you provide photos? Maybe take a screenshot and post it here?
Preppy Picker Posted August 4, 2025 #3 Posted August 4, 2025 Is the description a bad AI translation?

Solution S.ChrisKelly Posted August 5, 2025 Solution #5 Posted August 5, 2025 Helmet looks authentic & genuine. What's left of the ᛋᛋ decal looks fake. Bill Shea of "The Ruptured Duck" is an undisputed source for accurate information on German helmets.

I can see a tad bit of it peeking out. 2 minutes ago, MrBendy453 said: That’s what I was thinking… it looks like the runes are painted over a Heer decal. I can see a tad bit of it peeking out. Marshallj Posted August 5, 2025 #8 Posted August 5, 2025 Thanks for the pictures. Posting links is a frowned upon practice. I agree with S. ChrisKelly.

Preppy Picker Posted August 5, 2025 #10 Posted August 5, 2025 Are you the buyer? Posting links is fine, the problem is that they don’t work after a while so it helps to show pictures otherwise in a couple of months the link no longer works and this thread would become useless.
Mr.Jerry Posted August 5, 2025 #11 Posted August 5, 2025 SS runes would not have been on that side of the helmet. They would have been on the tricolor shield side. This was a DD M-35 army helmet that one one buggered up.

I did purchase it and still have time to cancel this order. I did not want to get clowned for having the process backwards—sorry for the confusion

I did not want to get clowned for having the process backwards—sorry for the confusion Personally I would cancel the order and look for an untampered with helmet. If you are seeking an authentic SS helmet, be prepared to spend several thousand dollars, and I would do some very hard research before getting an SS helmet. If you are looking for a common Third Reich Army or Luftwaffe helmet I would also look for one with a complete liner and chinstrap. There are plenty available but with everything in this hobby do research and ask questions before purchasing... Quality over quantity is more important in some cases when it comes to Third Reich items. Leigh
Preppy Picker Posted August 5, 2025 #14 Posted August 5, 2025 The runic decal was worn on the left side, known as the reverse decal foreign volunteer version.

The seller has guilt tripped me into keeping this helmet……..I seriously have no clue what to do. Found another one I would have purchased—Helmet link I feel like the worlds biggest idiot right now
S.ChrisKelly Posted August 6, 2025 #19 Posted August 6, 2025 Post #18... Thanks for the link. Nice looking helmets. Way overpriced! The police helmet you showed in the image in Post #18 looks like it's been very amateurishly repainted. I think the decals were applied after it was repainted. Helmet looks original, but it also looks like it's been altered from its original state. Run it past Bill Shea. He was always super extra helpful to me.

S.ChrisKelly Posted August 6, 2025 #21 Posted August 6, 2025 Just a thought... Tonight, I saw Star Trek {The Original Series}, from 16 February 1968; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterns_of_Force_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series) It reminded me that movie studios, especially those in the late 20th century, before the advent of reproduction helmets, acquired authentic, genuine helmets from the Second World War and "repurposed" them for their own use. Many of these helmets found their way into the collectors' arena when film studios' costume departments eventually disposed of their respective inventories.

True, but IMO on something less that 1% of the helmets, and I would be shocked to see it on a m35 - I think I have seen maybe 2 real ones in my life both on m40s. My point was of more of a "wrong side" generality. That was a rubbed out army decal. At least the helmet in the original post would still display well as a DD army (you can only see one decal at a time anyway). We all make mistakes. Better to ask questions before you leap. (and shame on the seller for guilt tripping you!)
