What are these insignia?

I've noticed these on most uniforms but what are they? I'm not very familiar with german stuff in general. I couldn't find a explanation on them but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

So they are for officers?

could be but I'm not a SME on DDR insignia based on the picture

Edelweisse is correct, the collar tabs are for Grenztruppen officers.
