Very interesting, they would use it on the lens during freezing temperatures to keep from fogging up. Thanks so much J.T. and Mr Bushido! Ken -

I also think the above post is correct. 【不凍液】= "Antifreeze" -

The characters were worn and the details were unreadable. At the top, it reads "124th Infantry Unit" and "1st LT Ishiyama". At the bottom, it reads "124th Infantry Unit", "18th Supply Units *Reserve", and "No. 56". -

Hello Otter42, It's a container for antifreeze liquid for Japanese gas masks. p.261 2. GAS MASK ACCESSORIES. The carriers of most army gas masks are provided with... a container for antifreeze liquid (fig.264.) (Figure 264.) Metal flask for antifreeze liquid. https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/IJA/HB/HB-9.html -

Cross posted from USMF sister site. Maybe folks here can Help ID A pack worn by the US Soldier in this photo from The Battle of The Hurtgen Forest? I don't know if it might be a german "Tornister" pack he might have picked up. It looks kinda like one but seems different. Caption: "SC 270664 - U.S. infantrymen leave the muddy road to enter the the Hurtgen Forest, Germany, as they advance against German installations in the wooded area. 18 November, 1944." Nice assortment of Hindenburg Crosses and variations. Looking for the black case for “Widow/Parents” Hindenburg Cross…which is rare. -
