That’s a beauty. Back in 1986 I found an SS Alpenland photo album from a high ranking SS officer who was inspecting an armored train. The turrets had police panzer men as crew wearing the black wrap with the police eagle.

September 24, 2025Sep 24 Author #35 Field Gray caps on everyone, and curious it is as they are hanging around the Self Propelled Artillery Piece, the Wespe, which is painted the new Dark Yellow, which production only started in early 1943. So location and exact date was not mentioned. One thought on this might be as the crews of these vehicles were to wear the Field Gray Panzer uniform with Red Waffenfarbe, maybe when this photo was taken they only got the caps first, and would soon get the rest of the uniform???? And these men are assignees/transfers from real tank units still wearing the Black ones it's note worthy that none wear the Skulls on their Pink Piped Collar tabs, maybe then this supports this thought??

In your original post of this photo (post #4), it appears the other communications specialist (only partially in view, to the left of the one you're pointing to above) is using an Enigma machine - something not often seen in period photos.

April 21Apr 21 Author #42 A Still from a moving picture believe this is the Sitzkrieg Winter of 39-40, Feld Grau Muetzen all around, no unit is given. Also gives a view of the necessity of the crews having to wear Greatcoats in cold weather for lack of anything more streamlined, that will have to wait till late 42 early 43 with the new Mouse Grey/Field Grey Winter tops and bottoms, later camouflage sets.
