tiger41 Posted January 7, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 7, 2019 Both of these badges are regular Japanese navy and not merchant navy. The first is a midshipman's hat badge. The addition of the 8 point compass star is to signify him as a reservist. The star usually has a silver wash that wears off very easily. The same applies to the second badge, a visor hat badge for an officer's hat but the cherry blossom has been replaced with the compass star meaning he is a reserve officer. The compass star is used by the merchant service but on different insignia. This same star (smaller in size) is worn on naval shoulder boards and collar insignia.
