Polygon Posted November 24, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2018 I picked this up years ago but I haven't been able to figure out the country or era. Does anyone have any ideas? I couldn't find any markings.

RRA227 Posted November 24, 2018 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2018 With the punch out hole I believe it is a captured and reissued shovel. Not sure if it is Russian or German capture. Rich A. in Pa.
Polygon Posted November 24, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted November 24, 2018 Thanks for the comments. I did some research and my theory is that It's a Russian WW1 era entrenching tool, Finnish capture. The paint job especially is identical to that used on Finnish shovels.

gwb123 Posted November 27, 2018 Share #10 Posted November 27, 2018 Punch out removed the existing country maker mark. Rich A. in Pa. Thanks for that explanation. Seems like a grand waste of time... the troops will know what the item is and where it came from. Oh, the vanity of nations!
Polygon Posted November 27, 2018 Author Share #11 Posted November 27, 2018 Thanks for that explanation. Seems like a grand waste of time... the troops will know what the item is and where it came from. Oh, the vanity of nations! When I was researching, I saw some examples of captured shovels with a leather strap running through the hole so it hooks up with their gear.
