vintageproductions Posted January 6, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 6, 2019 I have owned an awful lot of WWII Japanese field caps but this one by far is my favorite, and one of only a few that I have ever kept. It was common practice in the Philippines for Japanese troops to have local ones made out of any available materials after their issue one fell apart or rotted. I have had them out of white canvas, woven bamboo, etc. This one is made out of some old American denim material that was left after the US forces boogied out. Made out of a pair of 30's-40's denim work trousers ( denim is much darker then the pics appear), and to uber denim geeks like myself, the coolest part is part of the selvedge band is sewn under the sweatband. This one i bought from Dan Griffin and I believe he got it from Eric Doody so it has a great provenance trail.
RustyCanteen Posted January 7, 2019 Share #2 Posted January 7, 2019 Now that is cool. I think the Philippine Army had a number of the US denim fatigues just at the start of the war (in addition to what the US troops had). Makes you wonder what happened to all of that stuff. vintageproductions Posted January 12, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted January 12, 2019 It's the only one I have seen, but I am sure there are other pieces.
daniel griffin Posted January 13, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 13, 2019 That is a great cap. It did not come from Eric, it actually came out of a house about two miles from me in Hamburg Pa.
