Austrian LGKT NCO Bayonet

Recommended Posts

Gents,

This is an Austrian Landgendarmerie Kommando (LGKT) bayonet for a NCO.  This is the Sergeant's version of the Model 1895 bayonet with a curved extension on the guard.  This extension is not found on the guard of the standard enlisted version of the Osterreich (Austrian) M95 bayonet.  Notice this particular police bayonet has a blue finish whereas the standard versions are typically finished bright.  This blue finish was likely applied during WWII when the Osmark Polizei and Gendarmerie were given the status of becoming German Policemen and given new German uniforms.  It has a swivel loop on the pommel that allows the Gendarmerie NCO knot to be attached.  This loop is also typically not present on the standard issue M95 bayonet.  This bayonet has Osterreich Landgendarmerie property markings on the top of the pommel in typical Austrian style for various military unit property markings.  The frog is brown leather as the leather accouterments of the German and Austrian Gendarmerie were all brown.

Here is an example of the Army NCO bayonet that was finished bright (actually a dull non-reflective finish on this example) instead of being blued.  This particular example has the curved guard extension but does not have the auxiliary sight on the muzzle ring that is seen on the blued Gendarmerie example.   The sight on the muzzle ring was to change the point of impact (POI) when the bayonet was attached to a carbine.  Notice that the scabbard on this private purchase NCO bayonet is also finished in this same dull non-reflective finish as the bayonet itself.  Also notice the private purchase Austrian pigskin frog on this bayonet.

Thanks for the kudos.  These knots shown above on the NCO/Officer bayonets are red/white/red in the Austrian colors for the between-the-wars Austrian Republic.

Here are a few more Austrian knots from the time of the Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
