I Hate Moths Posted February 7, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2021 I bought this RAF greatcoat right out of England about 20 years ago. It cost 9 dollars on eBay and 50 to ship to US. I realized early on that the chevrons were up side down. Is there any reason that would have been done? Can someone please help with dating, and advice on what to do about the chevrons Link to comment

Kia kaha Posted February 7, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 7, 2021 Date looks like 1932 could be worn up 1952 cheers Tony Link to comment
I Hate Moths Posted February 8, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted February 8, 2021 Thank you Tony for your response. I am absolutely relieved that i did not fix things that were not broken. The coat has a broad Arrow similar to those on Canadian uniforms of WWII. Could that help in narrowing down the date? Link to comment

I believe the Greatcoat is British from late1930s up to 1952 as all buttons are brass Kings crown, WW 2 style label. Rank is for Junior Technician, I say British or Royal Air Force as there is no National tab on the shoulder. Tony Link to comment

Ranger44 Posted February 16, 2021 Share #8 Posted February 16, 2021 No problem. It's a good large size as well, which is always more rare. Link to comment
numbersix Posted August 11, 2021 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2021 The 6/CLO/17439/6/CB46B contract is 1952, I have seen other labels by this manufacturer with this number dated 1952 and it fits in the 6/CLO/ sequence for that year. I believe your greatcoat label does have a date on it, below the ALE in Wales but it is obscured by the large handwritten '6'. the 2 of 1952 is visible I think. Link to comment
I Hate Moths Posted August 11, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted August 11, 2021 Thank you numbersix. I will give it a closer look at the handwritten 6. Tom Link to comment
numbersix Posted August 11, 2021 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2021 Welcome. I may be wrong but I've not seen this type label without a printed date. I have found that British Army and Royal Air Force uniform labels up to the 1960s seem more commonly to have a year date on the label than a contract code, yet by the 1970s the labels more commonly have a contract code than a year date.
