This quite colorful Imperial Japanese Good Luck Signed Flag measures approximately 29." high X 34" long. The deep red center orb is silk screened onto the darkened white field. The corner tabs are large and made from genuine pigskin leather. Thin silk tie strings are firmly attached to the corners. The fly and hoist side edges are hem stitched for added strength. There are a few scattered pin holes on the right-hand side in the field.

 

The flag was "Presented by the Suginami Junior High School".  Many of the slogans and well-wishes seem to be flight and flying related, so it is likely the owner may have been a navy or army aviation cadet or pilot.  The owner's name was not written on the flag.

 

Suginami (杉並区, Suginami-ku) is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. The ward refers to itself as Suginami City in English. The name Suginami dates back to the early Edo period and is a shortened version of Suginamiki ("avenue of cedars”). This name came about when an early land baron, Lord Tadayoshi Okabe, planted a row of cedar trees to mark the bounds of his property.

 

Flags that are navy or aviation related always seem to catch my eye!
