Thought I'd share my DDR pilot wings, earliest (bottom) to latest (top). All are unmarked, except for the screw disks of the earliest example. I believe there was an even earlier version that was a wreath surrounding a four-bladed propeller (like the hat device only larger), but I could be wrong.

I believe the insignia you mentioned is of the type shown in this photo.

I found it: per Military Pilot & Aircrew Badges of the World, Volume 1 (1870-Present) by Don Chalif, the first pattern DDR Pilot Badge (1956-1959) is shown below. Mr. Bushido, the same reference says your insignia is for 'Technical Engineer, Non-Rated' authorized in 1963.

Thank you for correcting my post.

 

I think the note in the reference I have is wrong.
That should be it, the insignia has a gear-like design.

 

I didn't notice that the "hat device" you pointed out was pointing upwards, and I mistook it for the downwards.
