Preppy Picker Posted June 5 #1 Posted June 5 Way back in the day before the internet I would get catalogues and peoples lists. One of my favorites was Der Gauleiter for German collectors. I would take out ad space just about every month. No pictures just a description. What did you do before the internet?
SARGE Posted June 5 #2 Posted June 5 There is a blast from the past. Yep, I remember "Der Gauleiter". I couldn't wait for the next issue to come out.

I know about the wait. Bob would get complaints all the time concerning issues with delivery time. People would call me about an item I’m selling only to find out that someone got it 2 days ago because their issue arrived earlier. The closer you lived to Texas the faster you’d get it. I never bought anything out of Shot Gun news but I sold stuff from it. After a couple of years of people buying from me I had a Rolodex of addresses and started to send out my own catalog. That ended in 1986 due to an unfortunate robbery but I found Military Trader which I used until I gave in and got a computer some years later. For some reason I resisted the computer age.
Mr.Jerry Posted June 5 #4 Posted June 5 oh yea!- Der G, Shotgun news, Military Warehouse list, Swords and Armor? then piles of Manion's catalogs... We were lucky to have Bill "Scotty" Scott's Military Relics shop here in Milwaukee.
Preppy Picker Posted June 5 Author #5 Posted June 5 I would also get George Petersens list. I learned a lot from him and George Marinos of the Gettysburg Battlefield museum during the 1970s.
SARGE Posted June 6 #6 Posted June 6 I had the advantage of living in the Kansas City Metro so I would go to Manions and take a look at what I was interested in prior to bidding. Some very good stuff went through there along with some real dogs. I could also go to browse at Joe Walters place, House of Swords and Militaria when the catalog came out. Same statement applies as to the good and the bad. You had to know what you were looking at in Joe's basement.
Preppy Picker Posted June 6 Author #7 Posted June 6 I never got Manions catalogue but had an old catalogue here and there. I had some friends in PA who bought a lot from them and yes they had a mixture of good and bad. Same with House of Swords. Those old catalogs made good reference material in those low information days.
Rakkasan187 Posted June 6 #8 Posted June 6 One of my closest friends and collectors gave me a Manion's Catalog when I was younger and just that one book alone helped me identify a lot of the tinnies I had. I was later able to get Ron Manions FOXHOLE books on tinnies... I miss you John, Rest in Peace and thank you for taking the time to explain collecting to me Leigh
