I'm thinking about buying one but am concerned about fakes. Understand their are 3 basic types. Seem to hit all price points. Main concern is it is not is post WWII / and not authentic

I think the note means that it was not the more modern, somewhat simplified Kanji.  When I ask exchange student to translate WWII things this is what they call it.  Looks wartime to me as well. Nice piece.
