This is a picture of my grandfather in France 1917 on leave. It was colorized buy a forum member on the US forum. I have my grandfather's Kilt both his Tam o Shanter, and Glengarry, along with some of his insignia, and Spoils of War.

Very nice, feel free to post his items if you would like. I know we would enjoy seeing them.

Pictures are of his Legion hats, photo of him and his best friend Sam Frazier, and a picture of Sam. Two pictures of him and his mates, the one with four guys in it is him and Sam and 2 blackwatch fellows, and a small diary that he kept. The German items are things that he brought back, the German knife he took out of a boot of a German that he said thought a lot of himself. I wished I would have asked more about his experiences, but I was young. The last photo is a postcard I found, and I almost missed the pencil writing on the back, it says it's the bridge they crossed into the Rhine with the time, and date. He did tell me have a time he was sleeping in the trench under the foot boards, and a shell exploded on the edge of the trench completely burying him. They dug him out, and he was pretty shook, his rifle was completely bent.

This is his Field message book, he was in intelligence and watched the German lines. These are some of the reports that he filled out and some of the drawings

More of his drawings from his field message book, a map that he had hand drawn, and a pair of shorts that he bought in London to go under his Kilt and his wallet. He said he was standing on the street corner when a gust of wind came up and lifted his Kilt up so he went and bought the shorts to wear underneath.

Great items, thank you for sharing them as well as the backstory too. It is wonderful to have family items like that. The drawings are nice too, he seems to have been a talented man.

This is one of my favorite pictures, his father,(Charles) is on the left, Ernest in center, brother, (Walter) on the right. They all made it home safe. They took advantage of free land given to WWI vets and started a horse ranch in Grande Prairie, Alberta,Canada. He met his wife Beatrice Graham there, and they imigrated to the US in 1933. He was a skilled carpenter and an officer in a CCC camp in New Jersey. The boy in the photo is his brother Wesley.

I believe this is Walter with a team of colts he broke, notice the German belt he's wearing. The other is my grandmother out shooting rabbits.

Those are excellent family photos to have! Don't you wish you had his brothers uniforms too?

 

If I remember correctly, the last living (now sadly passed on) Canadian WWI veteran also immigrated to the US in a manner very much like your grandfather. I believe they have some records available at their national archives up there, in case you have not tried to see if there are any records of his that might be available. Thank you very much for sharing the items, it is so nice to see items with a more personal connection than just an issued helmet or just an issued piece of equipment.

Thanks so much for your nice comments. I have a small group of my great uncle, listed under Canada badges, he was my grandmothers brother, she is the one pictured in this post. I will post his uniform when i get time to photograph it, we recently moved. Ken

This is a very cool piece of family history, I'm glad you've been able to keep it together all these years. 

Thanks Ranger44.  There are a few things that are with my brothers, like a Mauser model 1914 with holster and spare mag he took from a German officer. Another brother had his compass, and some trench maps.   My grandpa had a pair of German binoculars in their case I wanted, but he used them for bird watching on the bay. I  should had bought him a new pair and traded!  I  was young and poor, and he lived 3000 miles away from me! 

The colorized photo of your Grandfather really brings him back to life.  It is amazing work if done right and your picture certainly was well done.  

 

Thanks for showing your family stuff.  The German bring-back items are a Prussian Telegrapher belt & buckle, a nice issue fighting knife, and a Prussian Officer sword knot (Portepee).  

 

Very happy with the colorized version of his photograph.  A fellow here on the forum did the work for me.  I  want to have the one with his dad and brothers done too. 

 

 

 

 

My brother found the originals and we had them colorized. 

I love the one with my great grandfather on the left,  my grandfather in the middle, and his brother on the right. This was taken in 1919 in B.C.  They all made in home! 

The other one has my great grandmother and my grandfather's youngest brother as well.  She was a nurse during the war.
