Just picked this up...not a savvy KM guy, can someone educate me why he seems to have two sets of rank stripes on his sleeve beneath the rate?

Matrosenhauptgefreiter als Unteroffizieranwärter. That little chevron denotes his status, a Seaman 1st Class awaiting promotion to Petty officer.

The badge above it all is the Artillery Mechanics specialty badge, in this context, the guns on a warship if you will as he's a ship board sailor, though these were worn by members of the land based German Navy Coast Artillery and Anti Aircraft units as well.

Thanks. I had figured out the Artillery Mechanic, but didn't know there was a chevron for essentially being selected for the next rank. I just thought it was a neat portrait with all the badges...I dabble in TR portraits

This is a nice portrait of a salt water Matrosen. He is also wearing a wound badge and his marksmanship lanyard, which was highly prized by enlisted men.

And the Wound Badge is in either Silver (3 to 4 wounds) or Gold (5 or more wounds)! That's a lot of action for a Destroyer Crewman right.

Not in hand yet...but it appears the WB is the early 'Condor' pattern... The acorn on the lanyard was also a reason to pick it up

Not much to add to what has already been said but that is a really nice portrait with some cool things going on. This guy saw some action.
