Here are some of my Swiss army instruments:

 

Left to Right:

1944 Recta 'matchbox' alloy compass, S/N shows it was made in 1944.

1943 Büchi marching compass Pattern 1932, has a 1943 inscription on it. (see middle photo).

1930s Lufft pocket altimeter, German made with Swiss property mark and silvered face (see lower photo).

1920s Büchi Artillery compass/level (GB Patt. 1916, Spanish Patt. 1920, Swiss Patt. 1929).

 

The 1943 inscription on the Büchi compass translates:

"My good friend Sgt. Major Ernest Roy, dedicated to the memory of common joys and sufferings with Combat Engineer Company 2, 1939-1943 Capt. Deller".

I'll do a more detailed study of the 1920s Büchi artillery compass later, it really is a nice intricate little instrument.

Here are a few closer photo of the little artillery compass/level (called a sitometer in old Swiss military papers).

 

Being an instrument maker myself I love instruments like this!

 

Through the viewing window can be seen a bubble level, once the compass is level the button on the end is pushed, this moves a stainless mirror to reveal the compass rose and unlock it. The rotating 360 degree part on the back is part of the artillery side of the compass. I have seen much later versions with this part not attached presumably these are only used as compasses.........
