This pocket hanger can with some US SF stuff but no one has had any luck identifying as an american piece.

Well, the fabric style looks US. But the design on the front looks more like an African headdress! Wish I could help! Hope you find out, as my curiosity is piqued.

Ive found some Ethiopian insignia made similarly to this

  Agreed.  This looks like an Ethiopian patch and I think it is pre-DERG, so would put it pre-1974 Haile Selassie time period.   Seeing how the US did have a military mission there until the Marxist DERG took over in the 70s, this could have easily been brought back by a US Advisor.   Hope this helps.
