Reizstoffpistole Hebel

Gents,

I picked up a German Police Hebel gas gun at SOS that I thought I would show. This WWI Hebel flare pistol was modified by the Polizei to fire tear gas projectiles (grenades) for use by riot control squads. The barrel was sleeved and sights were added to fire Caliber 4 Type A and Type B Reizstoffpatrone. Some short barrel gas pistols of this type were manufactured/sold by Anschutz and WUM in the 1920s and 1930s. Some were modified by the police in 1936 which added a wooden forestock as well as as the sleeved barrel and sights.

This particular gas pistol (Reizstoffpistole) is "1920" property marked from the Weimar Republic time period and was issued to the Schutzpolizei of Munster and is so marked on the front grip strap. The Schutzpolizei Munster markings conform to the 1922 & 1932 Prussian Police property marking protocols. These pistols are shown in Chapter 11 of Horst Friedrich, "Dienstwaffen der deutschen Polizei und Gendarmerie; Historie, Technik, Kennzeichnung."
