Hello,

Can anyone help me identify this. It was found in my Uncle's WWII foot locker. It is 25 inches long and 1 1/4 inches wide.

Thank you

It's quite possible it was a hat tally for the SS Normandie, which had a tragic ending.

Agreed it appears to be from the SS Normandie - thanks gwb123 for providing more info on this ship. A Google search for “SS Normandie sailor cap” produced several images of similar cap bands including this one, so I suspect that is the correct identification of your item:

SS Normandie was a French ocean liner that entered service in 1935.

She was interned in New York following the outbreak of WW2 in Europe.

After Pearl Harbor (the attack), she was seized and transferred to the US Navy (renamed USS Lafayette).

Conversion to a troopship commenced. On February 9, 1942 at pier 88 in New York Harbor, A fire started due to welding sparks. It spread rapidly partially due to strong winds.

The fire was brought under control but the ship capsized during the night due to water flooding from fire operations.

Too bad, she was a beautiful ship and very fast, she would have made a great troopship.
