Spanish cross, strange numbers on pin?

Hello all,

Any ideas on this Spanish cross, please.

The numbers on the pin are 2841. Could this be a WW2 copy for the recipient after losing the original?

Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

                   Thanks for your time.

Marcus,

I will give it a try to tell you what I see with your Spanish Cross.  First, I have never seen a four digit number on a pin marking like this before.  Second. the loose fit of the bottle shaped pin in the hinge also bothers me.  Third, I can't tell if the eagles are soldered in or a part of the casting but the odd scraped/scratched finish on the back bothers me as well.  Frankly, the scratch marks seem to be an amateurish  attempt to cover up bubbles caused by the casting process from what I can see.

I am not a fan of your cross since if I can see three red flags it is three strikes and you are out with me.  Perhaps others can see something different.

Thanks very much for your opinion. It is most helpful.

I do still think that it may be a private recipient replacement for a lost award.

But thanks anyway.
