I found this at the flea market this morning.  I'm guessing it is a smaller version of the Canadian Memorial Cross medal for a Canadian WW2 casualty.  I got lucky and found Cpl L. J. Guay on Find A Grave who served with the Essex Scottish Regiment:

After obtaining the correct period WW2 Canadian Essex Scottish Regiment insignia I put this shadow box together to showcase the Canadian Memorial Cross.
