October 19, 20214 yr #2 Yes, that marking is either a rack/inventory number or a police unit marking. If you can supply me with the complete serial number I can give you a very good estimate on when it was shipped from the S&W factory. In Austrian Police use these revolvers were employed with a locally made, black leather, flap holster. Regards, Charlie
October 20, 20214 yr #3 Yes, Charlie is correct that the German and Austrian Police used their own distinctive black leather flap holsters. Here is an example of the correct Austrian Polizei revolver holster. Notice the pouch for extra .38 S&W cartridges and the Austrian flat rivets.

With that information I can estimate for you that your Victory likely shipped from the S&W factory in the January-February, 1944 time frame. This information comes from the Victory Model Database.
