Monument to Long Missing RAF Bomber Crew Erected in Holland

Gentlemen:

Just noticed this coming to me from the Last Stand On Zombie Island site.  In 1943 a Short Stirling bomber BK716 marked HA-J from RAF 218 Squadron was returning from a bombing mission to Berlin.  It was shot down and crashed into a lake in Holland with the loss of all seven of the crew.  It was counted as Missing until last year when it was discovered and recovered from the lake where it had lain with its crew for three quarters of a century.

Now, one of the recovered engines has formed the basis for a new monument commemorating those lost Airmen.  The monument located in Almere, Holland was dedicated last week.  It strikes me as quite remarkable.

The photo was taken by the Canadian Embassy in the Netherlands.

A Youtube video of a BBC report on this entire story can be found here:

It is yet another reminder that the past is not really past.

Regards,

Charlie
