It called KHARTOUM The Ultimate Imperial Adventure. A very detailed book on the entire experience in the Sudan, from Hicks Pasha to the reconquest of the Sudan by Kitchener, goes into detail of bios of the leading personalities, a history of the region and  of the native clans and tribes etc along the way, the battles, Tamaai, Gordon's defense of Khartoum, Ordurman etc are covered in great detail. It's a big book, 413 pages of narrative.

I think it's been 20-30 years since reading a book about this. I'll have to take a look for it.
