Between Tedium and Terror (WWII Pacific)

Between Tedium and Terror: A Soldier's WWII Diary, 1943-45 by Sy Kahn is the remarkable story of a young man's experiences while serving in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The author was assigned to the 244th Port Company of the Army Transportation Corps. Unlike a lot of books that focus only on combat unit accounts, Kahn's outfit was tasked with the backbreaking labor of loading & unloading ships in far-flung locales, under increasing threat of enemy attack that often materialized.

This was a part of the war that I was not all that familiar with, so reading Kahn's book was a real eye opener. Kahn was very perceptive and an excellent chronicler of events, and reading his book is like being right along side him as circumstances propelled them ever closer to Japan (which Kahn also saw as a member of the occupation troops there). I will also add a few images below of several book pages, relating a funny story of Kahn's concerning Japanese Philippine occupation money; I have some examples of that same currency that was brought back by relatives serving in the PTO as souvenirs.

Kahn's book is very highly recommended. It is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Between-Tedium-Terror-Soldiers-1943-45/dp/0252018583/ref=sr_1_1?, and is also free to borrow on the Archive website (https://archive.org/) with an account that is also free to sign-up for there; the book itself is located at: https://archive.org/details/betweentediumter00kahn
