September 8, 20223 yr #1 Here is a portrait of Lt. John Maddy Moore Hewett. His home still stands at Wycombe. A history of his estate is below, from where I received the below information. http://www.bucksas.org.uk/documents/hbg/Uplands.pdf A note on the back of the portrait reads “ The likeness of J.M.M. Hewett was taken at Winchester, {?} May, 1847 ----when a Lieut. In the 62nd Regiment” The 1851 census shows that John Maddy Moore Hewett was then a Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 62nd (Wiltshire) regiment. The 62nd had been stationed in India and suffered heavy casualties in the Battle of Ferozeshah during the First Sikh War of 1845. By the end of 1847 the regiment had returned to England. Hewett was appointed Adjutant in 1848 and was based in Bury at the time of his marriage in the following year. He was then transferred to the 62nd’s depot in Mullingar, Ireland. He appears to be wearing the medal for the First Sikh War in this portrait. In late 1854 Hewett was appointed Captain Adjutant in the Royal Bucks Kings Own Militia. The photograph included in this post shows him as Capt. Adj. of the Royal Bucks. Anyway, just sharing a fun and unexpected local (Pennsylvania) find.
