What is the best way to preserve and display old patches like rating insignia? I only have one right now - a pre-WW II Navy rating badge, but I expect to acquire more as part of my WW II collection. What’s the preferred way of storing them - Riker boxes? If so, how are they attached to the inside of the box? Any other options?

 

I don’t want to destroy the historical value (and at some point I’ll probably be worried about monetary value) - but I want to be able to keep them and show them in a practical way.

I like Riker mounts.   They come in various sizes and depths and you can stack them for convenient storage.  Since the items are held in place by the pressure between the foam and the glass you can change your patches around as you acquire them.  They are also reasonable as the price where I get them is the more you buy the less you pay per mount.

Thanks - I don't have any yet and I didn't realize they were just held in place by pressure. I like that better than any kind of adhesive!

 

Guess I need to start some shopping... 😁

Any concerns with photos in a Riker case? I have some of my uncles from WW II but I don’t wa t them sticking to the glass!

I have not had any problems.  

if in a high humidity environment, the silica gel packs (do not eat) inside a case can help with that. you do need to replace/dry them out them every so often.
