Here is one of the examples where someone has taken a circa 1980s SAS wing (photos 1 & 2) and purposely tampered with it to give it the appearance of a WW2 era SAS wing (photos 3 & 4).  A number of the genuine WW2 era SAS wings have wings that lack the upward sweep and instead are parallel to the ground.  So the rear black canvas like backing material is removed along with any padding material to make it more pliable.  They then pull the wing tips down and destress (age) the front.  Now they try and sell it at a much higher price as a WW2 era SAS wing.  They have appeared for sale out of the UK so someone over there is doing this.  Don't fall for this.  

Here is a reproduction WW2 era British SAS wing that have been selling on eBay for many years now.  See how the wings are parallel to the ground.  Supposedly when they first came out some SAS troopers actually preferred the look of this wing and actually wore it on their uniforms.

 

 

I should add that I have seen at least one of these wings sewn to a BD. Not being able to see the back side of these wings makes evaluation much more difficult.

Here is a reproduction flat winged SAS badge based on WWII style.

 

I brought one from a guy down here for $NZ15/GBP7/$US10. This was amongst a few other Brit and NZ SAS wings,which I brought of him.

 

As a side note we wore Brit made SAS wings up to the mid 80's to late 80's before having our own made in NZ.

 

I had posted on BBF as I didnt recognize the style as WWII and although padded I asummed it could be a modern variation or as a friend sugested SBS, next to it is a legit 1970's SAS padded wing (this style was used by NZ SAS).

 

I rather quite like it but note the gap between the chute and the blue colour behind the risers.

 

Also the colous are so close that they could of been done by the same manufacturer, both wings and another were in the same collection.

 

However it is a reproduction.

I could be wrong but this looks like another one of those tampered/modified 1980s era SAS wings that has surfaced on eBay out of of all places the UK and advertised as a, "GENUINE 1944 PATTERN SAS PADDED PARACHUTE WINGS (SPECIAL AIR SERVICE).  It looks like they removed the white thread detail (risers) from the front of the chute as well as along the top of the wings edges.  Normally when you see the lack of these white threads on a piece there is more surface damage to the front of the piece where it has scraped across something in the field repeatedly.  The backing material and padding seemed to have been partially removed so they could straighten the wing tips so it has that look of a WW2 era piece.  The reason I'm not 100% sure about this is the addition of a single black thread down the middle of the chute to possibly mimic a WW2 era piece.  Most counterfeiters miss this detail.

The above wing is a worn 1960s era wing.below is one I got from a NZSAS vet

as you can see the white lines disappear easily, these have never been on a uniform. Original 100%.(but not 1944)
