July 19, 20233 yr #1 I câme across this photograph today, which I'm sure many have seen, but if not, depicts Oberleutnant Hans-Joachim Marseille, born 13th December 1919 Berlin, with his mother Charlotte. Marseille, who's nick name was 'Stem von Africa' or 'Star of Africa' gained 158 air victories, 7 of them during the Battle of Britain and 151 during the North African campaign. The officer, recipient of the Knights Cross of the Ion Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, in addition to the Gold Medal of Military Valour, who attained the rank of Hauptmann before his death on the 30th September 1942, had the highest number of aerial victories over Western Allied aviators of any Axis pilot. Marseille was buried in the Heroes Cemetery at Derna before being reinterred at the Memorial Gardens at Tobruk.
