RCAF Jacket-Men's or Women's?

Featured Replies

I've seen these jackets and can't find the men's version that has just albatrosses on the shoulders, but I have seen women's uniforms that do. Am I correct in assuming this is a woman's jacket? What is it worth? Thanks!

Hi Big Iron.

Apparently the tunics worn by the WAAF had seam running from the front of the shoulder down to the bust and the bottom two pockets have a button fastening, whereas the mens do not. It doesn't look like yours has the seam and there are no buttons on the bottom pocket so I would say it is a male tunic.

This link takes you to a very useful article which explains the difference https://manleylucy.wixsite.com/website/post/waaf-o-a-service-dress

If that service number is readable a check via Ancestry or Fold3 might bring up the owner.

Hi Gunner, I appreciate your response. I'm not the owner, but looking into purchasing it as I don't have any Canadian militaria in my collection. What would a reasonable price be for something like that? It isn't very "sexy" in that there is no insignia besides the shoulder albatross, no airman's wings, award ribbons, etc. Would it have been such a plain Jane uniform for basic airmen?

This one, scroll down to the 4th tunic, is almost the same and it is up for $130.00. https://militariatoday.com/2022/08/23/ww2-raf-uniforms-for-sale/

Looking at others online that seems about right....
