August 27, 20232 yr #1 Kommer Pistol Taken by Neighbor Today, 07:42 AM Years ago, as a young boy, my neighbor friend and I would go playing war in the nearby woods. One day, when we were done, we stopped back at his house. He pulled out all of his dad's trophies from the war. I remember his web gear, German daggers, a helmet and pistol. Fast forward to the late 1990's and I happed to run into Mr. Smith. I asked him if he'd talk to me about his war-time experiences. And he agreed. He pulled out his trophies, but they looked much different than I had remembered. There were no daggers. He said that he was going to give them to his son. The S/D Luft helmet was there. A zeltbahn and a pistol. He was a shorter, heavier gentleman, who laughed as he said that he was drafted in 1943 for the infantry. However, several people failed to report and he was shifted into the artillery. "Thank God", he said. Look at me (meaning he was rather heavy), "I'd of never made it in the infantry. But the artillery, that was a blessing". He was attached to the 284th Field Artillery. He said at the end of the war, the Germans were surrendering in droves. While eating lunch from his kit, a young, German Luftwaffe soldier came through the nearby hedgerow with his hands held high. "He was just a boy"... "But that didn't stop me from liberating his helmet, pistol and poncho". The daggers were picked up along the way, until wars end. He agreed to part with these three items. Sadly, back then, I never kept the group together. I still have the Kommer and the zelt, but the helmet is gone. So can anyone help me with information on this pistol? I have limited knowledge of something like this. Thanks in advance.
