July 20, 20242 yr #1 I'm interested in obtaining an MP34, but notice that all the ones I have seen are from the Portuguese 1942 contract. I've tried finding out about this contract, but don't feel I have all the facts. What was the reason for this contract? Were these weapons ever used by Axis forces in WW2? Are there any MP34s out there without the 1942 Portuguese crest? Many thanks.
July 21, 20242 yr #2 My understanding is that these were new made MP34 sold to Portugal during the war. The Germans also sold new Kar.98k rifles and Luger P.08 as complete rigs to the Portuguese when they expressed a wish to buy them. The Germans also supplied bayonets and leather accouterments for both of these long guns. The bayonets for the MP34 were Mauser system bayonets with a closed muzzle ring while those for the rifles were standard S84/98 without a muzzle ring. I have read these sales were for needed cash and to support the Portuguese military and government during the war since Portugal was ostensibly neutral. I hope this helps.
