August 28, 20241 yr #1 New to the Forum , I was wondering what the value would be for this knife with the tip of the blade broken off , finding a replacement blade with the same numbers possible? or have the blade repaired making it a shorter blade. Wanting to keep original as possible,I would appreciate any help I can get.
August 29, 20241 yr #2 hello, This is a later war gravity knife. If you can find a loose blade, I would consider swapping out the blades (but not necessarily so). But I would keep the original broken one with the knife for historical integrity. A future collector may actually want the broken original. I definitely would not recommend re-pointing it. I personally would only buy a re-pointed knife for the parts. And it would have to be cheap. To me, I see about $200 here as is on its own or in parts. But this is just my humble opinion. I picked up a beautiful early issue with Tiger striped mapel-ing for about $750 years ago so I may be biased in my assessment. I have seen several parts for sale over the years, but I have never seen a loose blade. I have seen several of these for sale over the years with broken blades. I think many kids and vets tried to open cans after the war and broke the blades. They did not necessarily break the spike, grips, etc. So, I think the demand for a loose blade will be really high. That is why I think I have seen all loose parts for sale over the years except for the loose blade. just my two cents. What I think is best it to display with the knife in the retracted position and just leave it alone. Or sell it as is if you need the coin or are looking to just dispose of it.
