Need advice on removing Nazi decals from Spanish M42 Helmet

I picked this Spanish M42 helmet today at the flea market. It is a beautiful helmet that unfortunately somewhere along the line someone stuck Nazi decals on it. They are brittle and parts of it are flaking off when I gently scratch with my finger nail.
