There is probably a number embroidered there telling you what regiment he was is. You can see part of the shoulder board isn’t covered and the piping is a white color which most likely is infantry but could be cavalry yellow or any other light color branch of service or waffenfarb in German. Yes thats an Iron Cross second class and looks like it was just awarded since it’s pinned to his jacket. They normally only wore the ribbon in everyday situations.

June 13, 20251 yr #9 It looks to me like the board is covered with a sleeve to hide the unit numbers. Near the shoulder seam part of the board peaks out of the sleeve and you see a short piece of white waffenfarb. Or do my eyes deceive me?

It is similar to a photo I have seen of an NCO before. The "legs" of the silver rank star are visible on his epaulettes.
