These are often decorated with small flags, you get the stick stamped at versus altitudes to show how far you get. I think this is one of those flags, if you google "Mt Fuji climbing stick" you will see pictures.

Honestly looks like the kind of mini flag that you'd find inside of some greeting cards. There are other WW2 Japanese flags on ebay of the same type but not the same size. The fact that the sun's color is bleeding is indication of a rushed or cheap production that supports the vintage. Also the smell. But I'm sure there are experts here that'll chime in eventually.
