Foreign medals are not my forte', but I could not pass this one up. Just acquired it and cannot decypher the unit. It is marked to: "Pte. J. H. HAMILTON. MEAFORD R. Co.". The "R. Co." baffles me. Thanks for any help.

Just to clarify, I didn't think the Canadian militias were organized as regiments in 1866. So, I did not think this could be Co. R of some  unnamed Meaford regiment. But I may very well be wrong and that is precisely what this means - R Company. If so, is it possible to determine what Meaford regiment Hamilton was with? Hope that made sense.

The Meaford Rifle Company was a historic, 19th-century volunteer militia unit based in Meaford, Ontario Raised during the 1850s to 1860s, it eventually became part of the 31st Grey Battalion of Infantry and later merged to form the modern-day Grey and Simcoe Foresters of the Canadian Army.

History & Formation

Fenian Raids Deployment: The unit originally consisted of independent volunteer riflemen from Grey County. In the 1860s, they deployed along the Canada-USA border to defend against the Fenian Raids. [1]

Medals & Lineage: Historical artifacts, like the Canada General Service Medal, were issued to members of the Meaford Rifle Company (notably "No. 2" Company
