Jingasa were mainly used during the mid to late Edo Period (1700-1860). The word "Kasa" meaning hat and "Jin" military. These are Japanese Foot Soldier's bamboo and lacquer based helmets. These helmets provided exceptional protection from attack with a blade from a horseman. Styles of Jingasa varied according to family or Clan. This example bears the Family's MON or crest in gold on the front, which identified the wearer's affiliation. These were issued to Infantry who acted as Musketeers using the then prevalent matchlocks. Size: 12 1/2” wide, 11 1/2” deep, 5 1/2” high

I used to collect these and on every trip to Japan I would buy one or two. Gotta find the box they are stored in and photograph them some day.
