Displaying Some of My Bring-Backs: Gulf War & OIF

For all the years I was in the Army my wife had long tried to get me to display some of the items from my career.  I was never really much into the idea, as I didn't want people to walk into our place and see my Army Commendation Medals on the wall.  Juat wasn't me.

 

After I retired I took a job as a military contractor and the pay allowed us to buy a larger home.  Our home has an office, which my wife wanted me to use and to display some of my things. She, of course, to the upstairs 21'x28' bonus room as her "hobby room."

 

For the first year and a half we were in our home, my office was pretty much a place to store some plastic totes of junk, and its where our wireless router sat on a press-wood K-Mart desk.  In late 2011 I went to Afghanistan for my company.  While I was over there, my cleared out the office, painted it and furnished it with a nice large desk, shelves, lamps.  Surprised me when I returned home.  She insisted that I take this office and make it my own.

 

Over time I started thinking of ways to display items from my military career - six years Reserve and 22 years Active Duty.  I literally covered the walls with photos and items.  It's quite a lot, each item has special meaning to me.

Very nice display of items.. The first thing that caught my attention was the USASMA Class photo in the center..

I worked at USASMA for 11 years.. 08-19..

I went through class 55 ('04-'05).  I really didn't want to go, but DA gave me no choice.  As soon as I graduated I declined E9 consideration and pulled some strings to get back to 5th SF Group.  I started my Active Duty career in 5th SF Group (1986 to 1997), and wanted to end my career where I started it.  Returned "home" to 5th Group in 2005, did two tours to Iraq and retired in 2008.

How ironic.. I declined to go to class 55... I was ending my 3 year mobilization with the Army Reserves and I was getting ready to go back to my civilian job as a firefighter. I had been called up on September 12, 2001 the day after the attacks and the primary NCO that was slotted to go to class 55 got into trouble and was subsequently jailed. I was a stand-by secondary candidate and I also understood the implications of 3 more years of Active service upon graduation so I declined admission and retired with 22 years.. (10 Active 12 Reserve)..

After I returned to the FD I was injured in the line of duty and medically retired. I was hired by the USASMA Staff and I wrote lessons the first year and then was hired by the Battle Staff NCO Course to write lessons for them. After that project was complete I became a CPOF instruction until 2015 when I was hired to be the History specialist/curator at the US Army Museum of the Non-Commissioned Officer. I was there until April 2019 when I was promoted and I moved to the 1st Armored Division and Ft Bliss Museum as the curator.
