Bob Hudson Posted February 18, 2021 #1 Posted February 18, 2021 This has been offered to me: I have only this photo, which shows enough that I should able to find on match online. Wrong. There are tons of pickelhaub plates online, but almost all seem to have an eagle and/or a lion, except for one drawing of a similar plate. The webpage which posted this drawing, had it under the category HUSSARS https://pickelhauben.net/m15-steel-helmet-plates/
SARGE Posted February 18, 2021 #2 Posted February 18, 2021 Bob, This is an Imperial Austrian Police helmet if I am not mistaken. I think the plate is a Franz Joseph cypher.

Bob Hudson Posted February 26, 2021 Author #4 Posted February 26, 2021 Were the police part of the military in those days? Here's some more photos of this:
Bob Hudson Posted February 27, 2021 Author #5 Posted February 27, 2021 There's a thread for vintage Imperial fire and police helmets: https://www.worldmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/316320-vintage-fire-and-police-helmets/
SARGE Posted February 27, 2021 #6 Posted February 27, 2021 Thanks for the additional photos Bob. Yes, this is an Imperial Austrian police helmet for the Vienna Police (Sicherheitswache). It is missing the leather liner and interior chin strap that goes through the metal D rings inside the crown. These policemen were considered to be Officials (Beamte), not part of the military, in WWI Austria. They were folded into the German Polizei structure during WWII. They took a new oath, got German Police uniforms, and functioned as German Schutzpolizei and Gendarmerie until the end of WWII. They then went back to being Austrian Policemen.
SARGE Posted June 19, 2021 #8 Posted June 19, 2021 Yes I did. This one was worn by an officer. Officer helmets had the metal chin strap while enlisted Polizei had black leather chin straps. I was/am happy to have gotten it from Bob.
