Hello-

     New here, but on US Militaria Forum for some time. Need some help, please, in identifying the Imperial German units listed in this neat photo. Recently moved and still cannot find all my books. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. All the best,

Hello mccooper & welcome to the WMF. That´s a great picture!

The first two letters are the officer´s ranks:

S.L. = Second-Lieutenant (2nd Lt)

P.L. = Premier-Lieutenant (1st Lt)

Rittm. = Rittmeister (Captain)

Have yet to find out, if it is a "I" (Infanterie) or "J" (Jaeger)

Ul = Ulanen

G. = Garde

R. = Regiment

R.z.F. = Regiment zu Fuss
B. = Brigade or Bataillon

L. = could be Linie or Land

I have to do some more research, hope this helps for now.

Hallo, PK-

     Thanks for your reply; I appreciate what you have said so far - big help. I though J was Infantrie, but, would Infantry be a part of a Reitkursus? Am also puzzled by the K.H. Koenigliche Heer? Thanks again.

You´re welcome. Forgot the K.H., I´d say "Kaiserliches Heer" (Imperial Army). I think you´re right with the "I" = Infantry.

And yes, of course Infantry/Jaeger officers were mounted. At least at garrison duty, on parades etc. Riding was THE officer´s sport then.

I´m sure you have already noticed that S.L. von Stülpnagel was the later General der Infanterie S.

1. Garderegiment zu Fuss was the first Regiment of the imperial army. Once again, great picture!
