usmedalman Posted September 1, 2021 #1 Posted September 1, 2021 I thought I would post this GT uniform that I bought from Gowan Military many many years ago. I always found it interesting that the DDR so closely followed the Wehrmacht uniform patterns of WWII.
Proud Kraut Posted September 1, 2021 #2 Posted September 1, 2021 The similarity of Wehrmacht and NVA uniforms was explicitly desired by the DDR government. The DDR saw themself as the only legal successor of the Deutsches Reich. Unlike Western Germany the DDR wanted to continue pre war German (Prussian) tradition. The idea to introduce soviet like uniforms (like those worn by early KVP units) encountered massive opposition and was cancelled. Thanks for sharing your GT uniform!
SARGE Posted September 2, 2021 #3 Posted September 2, 2021 Klaus-Ulrich Keubke and Manfred Kunz also discussed this issue in their book, "Uniforms of the East German Military 1949-1990". These very style issues were debated among those who were designing and implementing the East German uniforms. The issue was finally resolved as new uniforms evolved and the decision to use Prussian uniforms as a model won the argument.
