Boy Howdy Posted November 7, 2021 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2021 Wondering if anyone can tell me about this buckle? I was lucky enough to find what I think is the original keeper in the box O' stuff. Thank you all in advance

Solution Tonomachi Posted November 7, 2021 Solution Share #4 Posted November 7, 2021 This is a Spanish Civil War worn Nationalist Elite belt buckle model 31. The emblem on the front is that of the Spanish Foreign Legion. There is an earlier version with a crown in the middle representing King Alfonso XIII. However during the Second Republic of 1931 the crown was removed.

Boy Howdy Posted November 8, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted November 8, 2021 Thank you Gwar, Tonomachi. So this would date between 1931 and 1936? Very nice to know. I guess it's a keeper.
Boy Howdy Posted November 10, 2021 Author Share #8 Posted November 10, 2021 Knowing the other buckle is Spanish Civil War can I surmise that this belt and buckle are too?
Tonomachi Posted November 10, 2021 Share #9 Posted November 10, 2021 I would say maybe. I believe this type of design is still in use by the Spanish Military but goes back to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. I found another on the Internet with a different crown design. I've seen a number of these surplus buckles like the one you have for sale at insignia shows and flea markets so there is probably a way of dating them but I don't know how to date them. Boy Howdy Posted November 10, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted November 10, 2021 I believe that is an Alphonso XIII crown, so pre SCW/Franco.
