Otter42 Posted November 26, 2021 #1 Posted November 26, 2021 Is this Swiss of German? I checked online and now I'm really not sure, thanks for any advice, Ken
Gwar Posted November 27, 2021 #4 Posted November 27, 2021 As stated, it is German, the markings are from the issuance depot and is an acceptance stamp, 9 (Sept) 40 (1940) Fu (Furth), these types of markings are seen on a variety of items, Nice pickup !
Otter42 Posted November 27, 2021 Author #5 Posted November 27, 2021 Great, thanks for the info. Any idea on the name? Is that a rank preceding his name or part of his name?
daskrieg Posted November 27, 2021 #6 Posted November 27, 2021 looks like Gefreiter (private) ??? Hofort. I cannot see due to blurriness the whole name, but thats what it looks like to me
Proud Kraut Posted November 28, 2021 #8 Posted November 28, 2021 Maker is Marquardt in Heilbronn, Germany. These haversacks (Tornister) were called "Affe" (monkey) by the troops. Daskrieg is correct with rank and last name (Hoefert). If you are posting a photo of the writing w/o flashlight we can perhaps decipher his first name.
Otter42 Posted November 28, 2021 Author #9 Posted November 28, 2021 Here's some better pics of his name, he has it in two separate places on the pack. Again thanks so much for all you help. Ken
Otter42 Posted November 30, 2021 Author #11 Posted November 30, 2021 Thanks for your time, really appreciated!
Proud Kraut Posted November 30, 2021 #12 Posted November 30, 2021 You´re welcome. His name is not too uncommon over here. This site lists a Gefreiter Robert Höfert from Kuehlsheim, fallen in Russia in September 1941. https://spengler.li/otto/gefallene1939-1945.htm Let me know if you need something translated.
