Good point, why he doesn't wear one i do not know as his wiki lists it.

Old timers get attached to their old badges and insignia. Perhaps he just wanted to continue wearing it.  Many continued to wear their old swords even when replaced or out of fashion.

Hey found another one wearing it, this time a Sergeant, France 1940, no 1939 Bar for his EKI , has one for his EKII though, indicating only an award of the EKII in the Great War, has a Wound Badge in Silver or Gold we see, name of individual and  unit unfortunately unknown.

Found another.

Here  yet again an unedified one, an older Vet, now serving in the RAD, looks like a 233? on the spade insignia, if so , for Thuringia
which had Gruppen 230-238, probably didn't go back into the Army during the war, though that's not to say he didn't get caught up in it in one way or another in 1945,
