So to be clear I know zip about swords, that's why I'm here

I was told this is a WWII German Luftwaffe sword and odd because of the gold finish versus the silver finish usually found on these types of swords...

and I was asked to learn about the eagle(?) with the 5 under it, 12 o'clock position on the blade pic......what  is it indicative of ???

Thanks for any help...and it will most likely be at the SOS....

all the best

John

I’m not too sure it’s gold plated. It looks like a heavy smoker owned it and the tar turned it. The waffen amp is an acceptance stamp.

I was at an auction in 1981 that had a gold SA dagger. The buzz was that it was an SA Marine and Tom Johnson bought it. I wet my thumb, rubbed the back of the cross guard and the gold came right off. It was tobacco tar.

I passed that on to the owner...chances are it will be at the SOS if you attend..

Thanks for the info

I think the Eagle over 5 is the Luftwaffe acceptance stamp. I have seen them on the (spike) handles of the German Paratrooper knives. Just sold one. Dave
