Was paging through my Osprey Men at Arms on the Belgian Army in WWI, and the name Jas comes up as a term for the common soldier, what does Jas stand for?

In Flemish or Dutch jas means coat but It’s also a derivative of Jan which means John in Dutch and Flemish.

My guess would be it stands for Coat, as in the King's Coat of the Soldier.
