They did use these metal runes.  I have a couple loose ones and a bunch have turned up "ground dug"- they also made them out of thing sheet metal and placed over regular thread rune tabs.

It hid the white of the runes so snipers would have a harder time detecting the  SS soldier and using the white as an aim point.
