patches Posted December 16, 2023 #1 Posted December 16, 2023 Musketier Regiment Prinz Louis Ferdinand von Preußen (2. Magdeburgisches) Nr. 27, from 1917. Wearing his Iron Cross in the Formal spot for portrait, he wears an M1910 or the M1914-15 Transitional Officers Tunic you'll note, can't know because we can't see the Cuffs, , Officer's version has that High Semi Choker Collar. Topped off by a Nice M1915 Pickelhaube.
SARGE Posted December 16, 2023 #2 Posted December 16, 2023 Nice button hole IC. The ribbon is correctly folded.
patches Posted December 28, 2023 Author #3 Posted December 28, 2023 Nice shot of a turn of the century sailor of SMS Stosch, the medal, only thing it can be is the China Medal, but this man would not of been a member of Stosch then, as Stosch was in European Waters during the Boxer Rebellion, the North Sea and Atlantic to be specific, so he must of been on anointer vessel and transered out and over to Stosch after his China service. He is a Petty Officer First Class, an Obermaat, he has some kind of device on the Anchor, like a Ship's Wheel or a Cog, can't tell, and can't find a chart of the Imperial Navy specialty insignias.

patches Posted March 20, 2024 Author #7 Posted March 20, 2024 Three youngsters of Infanterie-Regiment Markgraf Ludwig Wilhelm (3. Badisches) Nr. 111 sometime in 1915 late. Still wearing the Regimental numbers on helmet covers. I suspect these ones are from the Machine Gun Company of the regiment, the 13th Company, as two have what appears to be Drag Straps, and they all have pistols. They are uniquely armed with the Hungarian Frommer Stop pistol.

That one was also in the German Army in WWI. Steve

That one was also in the German Army in WWI. Steve Yes, it is him. Hauptmann's father died in 1917. During that same year, Hauptmann learned that his brother, Herman, had been killed fighting in France in World War I. Not long after that, he was informed that another brother, Max, had also been killed while fighting in Russia. Shortly thereafter, Hauptmann was conscripted into the German Army and assigned to an artillery battery. Upon receiving his orders, he was sent to Bautzen but was transferred to the 103rd Infantry Replacement Regiment upon his arrival. In 1918, Hauptmann was assigned to the 12th Machine Gun Company at Königsbrück.[3] Hauptmann later claimed he was deployed to western France with the 177th Regiment of Machine Gunners in either August or September 1918, then fought in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel;[5] that he was gassed in September or October 1918; and that he was struck in the helmet by shrapnel from shelling, knocking him out so that he was left for dead. When he came to, he crawled back to safety and was back on duty that evening.
SARGE Posted March 21, 2024 #10 Posted March 21, 2024 Fascinating history of Hauptmann and his military service.

patches Posted June 13, 2024 Author #15 Posted June 13, 2024 An interesting informal portrait of a Sergeant who wears an hybrid Ersatz Pickelhaube, has a Grey Felt top, but a Leather Visor, though the Visor could very well be Gloss Painted Metal.

SARGE Posted September 5, 2024 #19 Posted September 5, 2024 Neat photos of Chaplains. It is interesting that none of them are wearing shoulder boards or collar tabs indicating rank.

It is interesting that none of them are wearing shoulder boards or collar tabs indicating rank. Kaplans do not wear Shoulder Straps, neither in the Great War nor WWII, it in WWII that they now wear Litzen, Waffenfarbe Purple. They apparently ranked among themselves with special titles without any rank insignia, highest title being Field Bishop (Feldbischof), which is equivalent to a Major General, do believe these ones wore their Litzen in Gold.
patches Posted September 16, 2024 Author #21 Posted September 16, 2024 A Hussar 1914. Regiment unknown, the Cavalry apparently did not mark the Reed Green Cover with Regimental number like most of the Infantry, Field and Foot Artillery, and Engineers
patches Posted October 9, 2024 Author #22 Posted October 9, 2024 Three Sergeants of either the 69th Infantry Regiment or the 69th Reserve Infantry Regiment in 1918, that would be 7. Rheinisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 69. Note the one on the left has the M1910 Officer type tunic with high chocker collar, the other two, the M1915 tunic.

patches Posted November 12, 2024 Author #24 Posted November 12, 2024 Here's an Attila of a Lieutenant the 3rd Royal Saxon Hussar Regiment Nr. 20, the unit was formed only in 1910, and apparently never had a Full Color Attila, just a Field Grey one, with Field Grey frogging. the frogging and shoulder straps in the Saxon State Colors of Green intertwined. The Light Blue Waffenfarbe is the Regimental Color, in example the unit's Muetze's Cap Band was Light Blue.
