SARGE Posted March 10, 2024 #1 Posted March 10, 2024 Gents, I just picked up a nice Japanese Wound Badge that I thought I would show. I believe this is the version that was awarded for wounds received rather than the identical badge that was awarded for illness. Dual pins on the back and nice red enamel on the front.
Tony v Posted March 11, 2024 #4 Posted March 11, 2024 SARGE Excellent ! Congratulations very nice indeed Tony
SARGE Posted March 11, 2024 Author #5 Posted March 11, 2024 Thanks for the kudos gents. Can anyone confirm this is the war wounded version by reading the central writing on the reverse?
Ivydiv Posted March 11, 2024 #6 Posted March 11, 2024 Not sure, but I think it is the badge for Wounded soldiers. I have one the same. Dave
SARGE Posted March 14, 2024 Author #7 Posted March 14, 2024 Thanks Ivydiv. I thought this Type 38 Wound Badge was the one awarded for wounds rather than illness.
abufletcher Posted June 18, 2024 #9 Posted June 18, 2024 I've asked one of my Japanese friends (and older gentleman who was once one of my students) about the writing on the back. I'll let you know what he says.
abufletcher Posted June 20, 2024 #10 Posted June 20, 2024 My Japanese friend confirmed that this is the type A badge for combat wounds 戦傷 (Sensho). The shape is supposed to represent a cherry blossom. A prior iteration of the wound badge took the shape of a shield. This website has lots of information about the evolution of the wound badge.
SARGE Posted July 11, 2024 Author #11 Posted July 11, 2024 Thanks for the follow-up information. I watched a 1944 Japanese movie last week concerning the heroic sacrifice of parents of their children to die in war for the Emperor. Interestingly the soldiers who caught diseases while in service and who were released from front line service were considered non-heroic. The movie showed the plight of these soldiers were considered shameful since they did not give their all and die in combat even though they served as best they could. An interesting viewpoint on the Japanese mind during the war.
SARGE Posted January 1, 2025 Author #12 Posted January 1, 2025 I received a nice gift of a Type B Wound Badge over the weekend that I thought I might talk about. The badge that starts this thread is referred to as a "Type A" badge for combat wounds. It is gold colored and has words indicating this criteria on the reverse. The badge I received as a gift from another local collector who collects these badges is the second kind of Type B badge awarded for non-combat such as illness. This badge is silver and again has wording on the reverse that indicates the wounds were not received in combat. The Type A badges were for combat wounds 戦傷 (Sensho) and the Type B for other wounds and illnesses 公傷 (Kosho) while in military service. I am grateful for the gift and it is a really nice end for me to collecting year 2024.
Ivydiv Posted January 1, 2025 #13 Posted January 1, 2025 I believe that sometimes the Type A is referred to as the Wounds for Veterans, and the type B is for wounds or illness for Civil Service employees. Don't really know. Dave
SARGE Posted January 3, 2025 Author #14 Posted January 3, 2025 Thanks for the look and reply Dave. It is often hard to sort out period nomenclature vs. collector classification in our hobby.
